Podcast, December 9

Tune in for a dose of your favourite English language radio show.

This week: time to say goodbye even though we welcome the new your, yes all right it's Christmas, French music with homicidal undertones, Sheldon Blackman from Trinidad and Tobago brings the Soca to Norway (and the sunshine to our studio), "It's a wonderful life" or is it?, the Pulse and, as always, lots of good music.

We are recruiting!

With the semester and the year nearing it's end "Snakker Ikke Norsk" is saying farewell to some of their cherished journalists. If you are staying in Oslo the next semester or longer and always wanted to bring out that inner journalist , now is your opportunity! For the next semester, we are looking for 4-5 new journalists and 1 new technician to keep our show fun, inspiring and entertaining.

What is Radio Nova?
"Snakker ikke Norsk" is just one of many shows on the radio station Radio Nova. Radio Nova is Oslo's studemt radio station, broadcasting on 99.3FM about 50 hours a week on just about any topic under the sun. Radio Nova is financed primarily by the students' semester fees and is almost entirely run by volunteers - this means you will not get paid! On the plus side, Radio Nova offers a fun and inspiring environment where to get first-hand experience in radio broadcasting, and while we may be amateurs our ambitions are high! Radio Nova regularly competes with commercial radio stations for national radio awards and several of its former members have gone on to careers in professional broadcasting. So whether you just want to dabble in radio or whether you are planning a career in radio, Radio Nova is the place for you!

What is "Snakker Ikke Norsk"?
Snakker ikke Norsk is the only English language show on Radio Nova. Our motto is "by foreign students for foreign students". Unlike most other shows, Snakker ikke Norsk is not bound to any particular topic, and in the past we have have covered everything from movie and concert reviews to reports on the economic crisis or the drug situation on lower Grünerløkka and even live, improvised comedy skits. We try to look at Norway through foreign eyes and bring the great wide world, but within that framework almost anything goes. As a journalist you would produce the content that goes on the air, choose the music and host the show. As a technician, you operate the mixer, computers, etc. and manage the show when it's actually going on the air.

If you want to know more...
The next broadcasting semester starts at January 12th 2009 and we look to find our new members by the end of january. We will have a formal round of interviews in the end of january, but if you are interested or have any questions, do contact us now! Our email adress is snakkerikkenorsk@gmail.com

Enjoy the holidays!

Updates on our blog

Hello dear Snakker Ikke Norsk afficionados,

we have made some small updates on our blog. In keeping up with new technology -- or really just using what comes for free with blogspot -- we have put up links to RSS-feeds for our blog. You will find the links on the left collumn in our blog. This allows you to keep up to date with our blog using your favourite rss-reader. Some mobile phones also allow one to keep track of RSS-feeds, so you can now bring Snakker Ikke Norsk with you wherever you go. Neat, eh?

One part that comes with the RSS-feeds is a new, more integrated podcast functionality: Simply drag and drop the link for the "podcast" RSS-feed into your favourite podcast-tracker (like e.g. iTunes or Juice) and you will receive the latest Snakker Ikke Norsk podcast. For now, we can only store one show at a time (i.e. the latest) on our servers, but we will hopefully fix that in the near future.

That is all for now. Let us now, if you encounter problems, have comments, suggestions or simply want to send us a an always welcome dose of flattering and praise.

17th of May Pulse

Today’s Pulse is dedicated to the celebration of 17th of May:-)
In order to give you, international students, some ideas on what to do, where to go and what you absolutely HAVE to see on this day.
1. You first have to see children's parade. The massive Oslo parade, which is greeted by the royal family from the balcony of the Royal Palace, includes some 60,000 children from around 100 schools as well as marching bands. The children's parade starts at Festningsplassen and Youngstorget, enters the main street Karl Johans gate at Stortorvet by the Cathedral, passes the Parliament and the Royal Palace and ends up at the City Hall square. Best view: along Karl Johans gate and in front of the Royal Palace. The parade starts at 10.00, but be sure to get downtown early enough to get a good spot.
2.The next parade you also have to see is he parade of the "russ", i.e. the high school graduates. The Red Caps leaves Hartvig Nissens school - Gyldenløves gate - Colbjørnsens gate - Parkveien - Henrik Ibsens gate where they join the Blue Caps from Oslo Handelsgymnasium - Henrik Ibsens gate - Frederiks gate - Karl Johan - Roald Amundsens gate – Stortingsgata. It starts at 15.00
3.Another Oslo's 17th of May event is called “17th of May for all". The anti-racist organisation SOS Rasisme celebrates the day with outdoor concerts, stands and entertainment in the idyllic Kuba park by the river Akerselva. Those who initiated the festival wanted to show that the national day was a celebration not only for the ethnic Norwegian majority, but for everyone living in Norway.
The festival has always had free access for everyone. The audience record is about 15 000 people, most of whom sitting on the grass, relaxing, barbecuing and listening to great music.
All the events are free of charge

3. This Wednesday at Stenersens museum you can see an exhibition " 2 Move/ Migratory Aesthetics". Migratory Aesthetics concerns the movement of people and the movement of images and how both movements, real and imaginary, provoke 'movements of sprit' or 'emotions'. It is, then, a double movement: images which move and which move us. The aesthetic dimension of the exhibition develops in two directions: the influence of immigrants in the culture of host countries, especially in the public space; and the influence of these countries in the subjective relationships of immigrants with their homelands.

I'ts until 11. Mai 2008. and cost 25NOK for students or 45NOK for not students.

Pulse 22.04

Here comes your up-date of what to do in Oslo the coming (hopefully sunny) week.
1. The spring feeling is here so the first arrangement on your must –do- list is a celebration of the international Day of Dance at Parkteatret. You’ll be able to see both amateur and professional dancers perform.
The evnt is on Sturday, 26th of April ,from 13 p.m. It’s free of charge.
More info at www.parkteatret.no
2. The second event is an exhibition: Recycling the looking-glass / Trash art – Found objects takes as its starting point Trash art and Found objects, two different practices in art where the reuse and recycling of waste, discarded objects, metaphor and meaning are central elements. Internationally, Trash art and Found objects are among the predominant strategies employed in contemporary art and recent art history. The exhibition becomes a starting point, a platform that raises important questions relating to contemporary art in a globalized world. Recycling as a global phenomenon has cultural and social implications with political, environmental, and economic dimensions.Recycling the looking-glass opens up to local, national, and international perspectives. The exhibition’s environmental and ecological dimensions make it a prescient approach to contemporary global, burning questions.
It’s free of charge and available at Oslo Kunstforening until 30th of April.
More info available at www.du-store-verden.no
3. You, of course, have to have a movie on your list of events for the next week. The one offered by Cinemateket this week is “FACTOTUM (Bent Hamer)”. A Norwegian movie released in 2005 with English subtitles.
Henry Chinaski works in factories and warehouses to support what he really wants to do: drink, bet the horses, take up with women as rootless as he is and, above all, write stories that no one wants to publish.Based on the novel by Charles Bukowski, Factotum is the story of a man living on the edge, of a writer who is willing to risk everything to make sure that his life is his poetry.
It’s at Cinemateket on Thursday, 24th of April at 16.30 and it’s free of charge.
More info is available at www.nfi.no
4. The last event is also an exhibition. “Our Holy Rooms”. Did you know there is a holy hindu lake in Oslo's forest, that Hell's Angels in Oslo have a sikh temple as their next-door neighbour, or that Norway in some connections is considered a buddhist country? The exhibition Our Holy Rooms gives you a chance to experience the religious diversity in Oslo under one roof. Our Holy Rooms is an exciting informative exhibition about religious minorities in Norway. Over two floors, the visitors can see reconstructions of holy rooms from six of Oslo's minority religions: A catholic church, an orthodox synagogue, a Pakistani mosque, a Tamil hindu temple, a Vietnamese buddhist temple and a sikh gurdwara.
The exibiton is at Intercultural Museum and is free of charge as well.

Loppemarked season

Hello lovers and haters,
I hope you enjoyed our little segment about loppemarkeds this week! I did indeed talk with Peter Watz from www.loppemarked.info about how to break into the flea market scene. If you didn't get a chance to hear him here's a little about what we talked about:
1) The best bargains can be found earlier in the day, so consider setting your alarm clock and getting up *gasp* EARLY this weekend. There are also many tasty treats to be had, so roll your sad-hungover self out of bed, and get your morning waffles at the flea market.
2) If you're a secret treasure hunter, be a discerning shopper. Look at a tags on clothing... old designer clothing can be worth a fortune. Also, check old books to see if they have been signed by the author because that will increase their value exponentially. Remember: their is a myth that an old Edvard Munch painting was found at flea market in Oslo, and sold for a fraction of the price to a clever buyer. This could be you!
3) As a rule, the best finds can be found on the outskirts of the city. This is where rich pensioners are starting to retire and give away all their things!
4) Top tip for this weekend. The best bicycles this weekend can probably be found at the flea market in Ekeberg hageby. These should sell from anywhere between 100 and 300 NOK... quite a deal if you ask me! More information can be found at the loppemarked website, but Ekeberg can be reached either by bus 34 (Ekeberg Hageby) or by the trikken.
Alright kids, this should be plenty of advice. And keep in mind: all of the proceeds from the loppemarkeds go to charity, so spend freely. It's one the only shopping experiences in Norway that shouldn't hurt your pocketbook too much!
Best of luck,
G-to-the-wizzle (aka Gwyneth).
ps. Consult www.trafikanten.no to figure out how the heck to get to these flea markets.

It starts at 18.30 and the entrance fee is 45 NOKs for members and 75 NOKs for non-members.

4. If you do not want to spend any money on watching movies, there is also an entirely free option: On Monday, April 7th, the movie «You Really Got Me» is shown at the University in Blindern. It is a Norwegian movie with English subtitles. The movie is about Jan, a fastfood-business owner who is going bankrupt. His girlfriend has left him, and he is being exploited by his live-in father. Therefore, he has nothing to loose when he gets mixed up in the kidnapping of famous rock star Iver Mo. But Jan has never been able to do anything right his whole life, and there are others who want to get their hands on the ransom money. The movie is described as a black comedy and it is shown at Georg Sverderups Hus 1 at seven. The entrance is free.

5. And last but not least, we have a scavenger hunt for you: Organized by the special events programme of the UIO, it starts Friday, April 4th at 2 o'clock at Universitetsplassen (down-town). Participants will be divided in teams and have to go on «missions» in the streets of Oslo in order to collect points. Theatresports - additional info

If watching theatresports (or as Keith Johnstone put it: improvisational theatre meets wrestling) is not enough for you, there is an excellent opportunity to try it out yourself too. Teater Liksom, one of the impro-groups mentioned in the previous post, has a weekly workshop, wednesdays at 6PM, before they play their regular show. Here, you can either watch or try out an impro-game or two yourself.

But wait, you say, aren't these people playing their shows in Norwegian? Yes, most of the time they do, but they'll play an occasional English show too. As for the workshop, they are also very forthcoming to non-Norwegian speakers and if you get together with a couple of your friends, they'll set up a special English section at the workshop for you. Email them at post@teaterliksom.com for more info.

The Pulse this Week

This week in the pulse, some American football, a Scottish band and a little shopping.

1) The culmination of the National Football league comes this weekend, with the celebration of the epic Superbowl on Sunday night. Hosted in Glendale, Arizona it is sure to be a tight game with the New England Patriots facing the New York Giants. All American expatriates or football enthuasists can enjoy the game in the comfort of the Hard Rock Café located at Karl Johansgate 45. Better take a nap beforehand because the pre-party starts at 10 pm, with the game kicking off at midnight. As far as I can surmise, this event is free of charge.

2) To be called ‘the new shit’ by British music magazine NME, is quite the label to live up to. Tonight, Thursday January 31st, the electro exploits of the band Gay Against You will surely not disappoint. This Glaswegian duo is heralded for their incredible stage antics, which can involve everything for cupcakes to aerobics wear. Also supported by DJ Samlet Presse, the show starts at 9 pm. Tickets are 50 NOK and Spasibar is found at St. Olavsgate 32. Find the entrance in back courtyard.

3) Got the January blahs? That’s nothing a little shopping won’t cure. After a big nights out Friday and Saturday, you’ll like nothing more than to check out the bric-a-brac market in Grønland this weekend. Get off at the Grønland station and peruse the eclectic wares from 7 am to 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday. This event is free of charge.

Starategic Pulse:-)

Time to get back to the traditional Oslo Pulse. Today the Pulse is a strategic one: it suits both the new international students and the old onesJ for those of you who don’t know where in Oslo you usually find something to do not spending a lot of money, today’s Pulse gives you an idea of four place of that kind. Those of you who are here from the last semester can take it as a ready made plan of activities for the coming week.

The first place as well as the first event is a concert at Chateau Neuf. On Wednesday Siri Nilsen is coming to BokCafeen(one of the bars there) with her ukulele. It starts at 21.00 and it’s free of charge. For more information check: http://www.studentersamfundet.no/

The next event is a jazz concert at The Norwegian State Academy of Music. It’s three variants of vocal jazz this time. The concert is on Thursday, 17th of January at 19.00 at Auditoriet an NSAM. It’s free of charge.
The NSAM is having a lot of concerts, so it’s worth checking their homepage at www.nmh.no

The next strategic place is AmatørenJStudents house at Sogn student residence. Each Sunday they show a movie at 20.00 .this Sunday it’s “ Mulholland drive” by David Lynch - A Love Story In The City Of Dreams. A woman in search of stardom. A woman in search of herself - in the city of dreams. A key to a mystery - lies somewhere on Mulholland Drive. Free of charge as well.

The last events for today’s Pulse is a movie at Cinemateket. Cinemateket is a part of the Norwegian Film Institute and has a project called “Contemporary Norway”, Almost each Thursday they show a Norwegian movie with the English subtitles. This Thursday it’s a documentary “Girls” by Hanne Myren. A documentary about the toughest girls in the 9th grade. About youthful presumption, loyalty, deceit, and female power structures at an age when everything is at stake. The film focuses on two groups of girls at a school in central Oslo: the tough gang, and the less daring girls from the west side. One girl is stuck between the two groups. Will she be forced to choose between the two gangs, decide which friends to abandon, and which identity to assume?
