Concerts for Free!

Soon after ones arrival in Oslo, it becomes clear that living in Norway can be sometimes a little be more expencive than expected. Going out in the city on a Friday night or visit a concert of a band will maybe cost the amount of money you planned to spend the whole week.
But don`t worry. Even with an empty wallet you can still enjoy good live music. (Here are some examples where to go):

If you like good jazz music you should visit the Stortorvets Gjæstgiveri at Grensen No.1 at Saturday the 20. Of September in order to see the ”Friends of big Chief Jazzband”, that is one of Europes oldest traditional Jazzbands. Terje Johansen trp, Harald Bergersen clar, Ola Reitan trb, Arild Berger pno, Svein Briså bass, and Olav Gustafson drms will play for you, starting at half past 1 PM.

Also On Saturday the 20th of September you might want to visit the Cafe Mono on Pløens Gate 4, where the Norwgian band ”Good Time Charlie” will perform live. Good time Charly play a energetic mixture of rythem and blues, which made them a popular road band for now 25 Years. The Concert will start on 6PM but to give you an impression you can listen to them now: http://www.myspace.com/gtctcb

If you have some energy left after an exhausting weekend, I would recommend you to go to the Club Blå in Brenneriveien 9c on Sunday evenings at 8PM. Because every Sunday evening, the band ”Frank Znort Quartet” performs there life with their feel- good mixture of Jazz, Grassroots and so called ”gibsymusic” (BALKAN??) The entrance is free and the place often pretty crowded. Take it as an enjoyful alternative to hang on your Couch, watching TV!

For all lovers of classical music, there is a Violin Concert at the Norges Musikkhøgskole on Tuesday the 23rd of September. The free Concert will be given by students of the Acadamy of music and start at 7PM in Slemdalsveien 11. For more information go to http://www.nmh.no/no

Every last Monday of the month, the Club ”Garage” invites some new upcoming bands to play in their Backyard (or in the basement as soon as Summer is over) The next band in line will be the ”Manheads” which play a rather heavier mixture of Stoner Rock and Punk and are already known for their good skills on stage. So if you want to see this band for free before they maybe become really big and tickets for their concerts are not affordable anymore, go to Garage in Grensen No. 9 on Monday the 29th of Septmember. The Concert will start at half past 9PM. For more information about the band og to http://www.myspace.com/manheads
